A Beginners Guide to Astrology: The Signs – Part 3

Astrology is like an ocean; you can sail off towards the horizon and find yourself far from land. You can dive in as deep as you like and never reach the bottom, but you can become a mariner, well able to find your way around. It is a study older than Rome or Greece, back to a time, when Earth was black dark at night and humankind watched the stars. Any long journey required knowledge of the stars and sailing and would be impossible without it. As far back as recorded in history, humans have used the stars as our guide posts. Astrology is something primal within us and connects us to the universe in which we live.

During the first Millennium BC the Greeks took concepts from Babylonian astronomy and created the first Zodiac. The Zodiac is a circle of 12 divisions located 30° apart; it is our road map through the heavens. It illustrates the sun’s path through the year, and yes, we know the sun doesn’t move. But just as you see a road sign as you drive, you know the sign isn’t moving, but still, the sign measures your progress. A weighted system of sun signs, planets, asteroids and divisions such as Cardinal, Mutable or Fixed, these variables exert their influences upon us.

Aries is first sign in the Zodiac, because it’s the sign during the spring equinox (in the Northern Hemisphere) and so, the beginning of the astrological year. It is the symbol of the Ram, because Aries are known to be headstrong and hot-blooded. They like challenge and confrontation. Aries is a Cardinal Fire sign ruled by Mars, the passion planet. Fire signs are all about energy, they’re leaders, innovators and creators. Fire operates in the present and so does Aries, living in the moment. Fueled by fire and Mars, Aries has a strong sense of identity, with sometimes a blind spot for noticing the contributions of others.

Taurus the Bull is a Fixed Earth sign. As Fixed Earth, they like things they can see and touch. Don’t try to explain a concept to Taurus, unless they can touch it. At the same time, Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of love. Taurus is pragmatic; they attach meanings to things and events. Never underestimate a Taurus, they rarely show off or brag. The have a bullish instinct for projects and hard work, there’s no project too big or too complicated for Taurus. Where others throw up their hands in surrender, Taurus thrives. Only just don’t get in their way or try to stop them, or you’ll likely get the horns.

A Mutable Air sign like Gemini equals a changeable nature. Gemini is the sign of the Zodiac between spring and summer, of two seasons, similar like twins, but still very different. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication. Gemini can be extroverted, adaptable and analytical. They’re quick-witted and the life of the party, but can be indecisive being of two seasons. They love to communicate on an intellectual basis, rather than on an emotional level. Their love of freedom and variety draws them towards many destinations at once, so you’ll rarely find a Gemini with nothing to do.
Cancer is a Cardinal Water sign, ruled by the Moon. Being both a Cardinal and Water sign, draws this sign to explore the full range of emotion. Cancer is usually ready to draw into their own shell, at the first sign of threat. They can be extremely emotional, without the ability to fully express their feelings to others. As the caretaker of the Zodiac, they’re deeply committed to family and friends. Cancer needs people around them, who instinctively understand their moods and fluctuations in temperament. Being ruled by the Moon, they’re a constant and dependable friend, but sometimes with a dark, broody side.

Leo being a Fixed Fire sign is concerned with the ego. Being ruled by the Sun, Leo is generally warm to hot in temperament; they want to be recognized for who they are. They are the King or Queen and they’re larger than life. They can be dramatic to melodramatic, just think of a lion, not getting its way. Their warmth sustains them; their leadership abilities carry them far afield. Leo’s are leaders, generals, actors; any career, which can provide them with the arena for attention they crave.

Virgo is a Mutable Earth sign ruled by Mercury, the communication planet. Mutable means flexible, as an Earth sign they’re stable, and “Down to Earth.” They’re a great listener, but sometimes say more than they should. Only because, Virgo is a problem solver, drawn to details. They seek perfection; ask no questions from a Virgo you don’t want answered; telling less than the truth, is less than perfection. Virgo might seem introverted, but they live in their intellect, they seek knowledge and understanding, more than silver or gold.

As a Cardinal Air sign, Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love. Libra is represented by Scales in balance and one to one relationships. As an Air sign, it is a sign of change, the time when summer turns to fall. As a Cardinal sign, Libra is dynamic and proactive. That’s the good news, on the down side, in their desire to please everyone, they sometimes waffle. They are easy going people, who know how to get what they desire through stealth rather than making demands because making demands could upset the balance. Libra sets the balance and never upsets it.

Scorpio, as a Fixed Water sign, is steadfast to the point some would call stubborn. Ruled by both Mars and Pluto, intensity, thy name is Scorpio. Filled with fiery passions, but like its namesake the Scorpion, there is deep emotional calculation. As a Water sign, there is sensitivity, empathy and feeling. Scorpio’s are powerful and determined, they’re good and they know they’re good, because in their intensity, they don’t come to the table unprepared. Scorpio’s can be larger than life and play to win, only they aren’t playing, they’re serious, very serious.

Sagittarius is a Mutable Fire sign, adaptable and flexible to situations. Fire as in fiery, out-going or impulsive, fearless when challenged, they want to try everything in life, at least once. This lack of a rudder is sometimes their undoing, as outgoing, people driven personalities, there are sometimes too many roads and too many people, to stay on course. They can be irrepressible, always living in the moment and always on the hunt for adventure, desiring action and change. Sagittarius is ruled by the planet Jupiter, the planet of luck, which is fortunate, as Sagittarius depends on it.

Capricorn is represented by the goat, always climbing upwards. They’re not impulsive or impetuous, as a Cardinal Earth Sign, they set their ambitions carefully and work steadily towards achieving them. Capricorns are counters of profit and loss, money and prestige are important to them. They’re ruled by Saturn, the taskmaster planet. Capricorn will never say never, they’re motivated by goals and lost without them. Their talents make them formidable leaders, adept at networking and famous for hard work and integrity.

Aquarius, Water-Bearer and humanitarian of the Zodiac. As a Fixed Air sign, Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet of rebellion and by Saturn, the planet of discipline. So Aquarius serves two masters, friendly yet, sometimes superficial, friends with everyone with no close friends, both open and guarded. They’re lovers of life and lovers of humanity, original and intellectual. Aquarius, eccentric and unpredictable; masters or mistresses of contradictions, intellectual artists and artistic intellectuals.

Pisces the Fish swims happily along with the deep currents, A Mutable Water sign, Pisces is ruled by Neptune, the planet of illusion. This makes them very emotional, capable of seeing all the possibilities, both real and imagined. A fighter for the underdog and for lost causes, imaginative and sensitive, Pisces is selfless, willing to let others have the glory, as long as the world is improved. Pisces are intuitive and sympathetic, almost to the point of psychic, living and loving in the world, as they would like for it to be.

For someone who’s a Leo, you really seem to describe the sign in the most superficial terms. The Sun is NOT just about the go, but also is about strength, courage, energy, vitality, willpower and health.

Leo is also powerful and determined (not just Scorpio). It’s the mighty LION of the Zodiac so start describing it as one instead of this show kitty you modern astrologers seem to love t ok try to take it into. It’s a LION: wild, powerful, fierce, courageous, temperamental, aggressive, and competitive. THOSE are the traits you need to highlight. Not this utterly modern and exaggerated “spotlight, dramatic, generous, warm” nonsense.

Leo rules the 5th House which includes SPORTS and ATHLETICS (not just the exaggerated creative arts and romantic affairs). We even rule the Strength Tarot Card! We’re the sign most associated with Hercules and Rome. We rule wild and solitary places like forests and mountains which means that we both love the outdoors and our alone time so we DON’T always need attention or luxury! In fact, modern astrologers conveniently forget that Aries was actually the “luxurious sign ” in medieval astrology while Leo was classified as both one of the “strong signs” and the only fully “feral ” sign.

So do the sign proper justice and describe it for what it is: a powerful, fierce, courageous, strong LION and the Zodiac’s ONLY natural apex predator. ?♌?
